A check list of things you might find useful to get you started or products we have found and liked!
- Crates - A crate should be big enough for the puppy to stand in a normal position comfortably and turn around. For a puppy you do not want too big to start with (you do not want it to be a pen). Approximately 18"Wx24"Lx20"H should be a good size to start and move up as needed. (Crates at Doggie Solutions)
- Crate pads - A comfortable crate bed is important however consider something washable for puppies in case of accidents. Also puppies may likely chew on beds so remember you may be replacing beds over the first year or so! (Waterproof Crate Pads)
- Dog Beds - There are more options than can be imagined but if you want something you can hose down and are (nearly) chew proof try Tuffies. (Tuffies Dog Beds)
- Collar/Leash - Again so many choices and all up to personal preference however if you plan to show a basic show lead will be necessary. You can get beaded and bespoke but to start a soft white leather show set with approximately a 26cm collar and 100cm lead should suffice. (The Showdog Company)
- Chew Toys - We have found these Zogoflex toys very sturdy, come in bone shape, frisbees, etc. and even though our Sealy did manage to break it eventually, they come guaranteed (Zogoflex). We also like these pieces of deer antler as chews. They last very well, dogs love them and they don't get smelly while being chewed down (Stagbar).
- Bowls - Also too numerous to recommend but added it on the list of initial needs just to be complete!
- Grooming Table - Wether you plan to show or not this will make you life easier (unless you go for the even easier life option of a professional groomer!) A table approximately 50cmx80cm is an adequate size and can be purchased with fixed or adjustable height. I find the basic fixed one ok when sat down but do find myself often standing bent over it (fixed table). You will also need an arm for the table (adjustable arm) and noose. One approximately 16" for this size table should suffice. (from Groomers)
- Grooming - If you plan to try your hand at grooming for yourself here are some basic tools to get you started. Hand stripping leads to a much nicer coat and a must for the show ring. It will require you going over your dog each week or two. I am definitely no expert and still have lots to learn with grooming the Sealyham for show but these are some of the tools recommended to me so far!
Stripping Stone - great for taking off longer wire coat
Slicker Brush - size and shape to suit you
Bristle Brush - I prefer for going over coat regularly
Comb - for detangling and going over wire coat and pulling some undercoat
Clippers - Wahl and Oyster are good reliable brands. You will want either an adjustable blade or a variety of sizes from 40
(inside ear flaps) to a 7 (chest and neck)
Scissors - basic needs will be thinning scissors, a small bull nose pair (for around toes) and a straight pair
Ear forceps - for plucking hair from ear canals. Do not get cheapest ones as the incomplete handles will pinch your fingers
Chalk - makes hair easier to grasp when hand stripping, easy to apply with a block rather than powder
Cholestral - a little on coat before chalking, also help control frizz when used sparingly
- Bathing - Use of human shampoo on puppies can be a bit harsh on their skin so I do advise a gentle puppy shampoo. A bath matt is also a good purchase to keep puppy from slipping if being washed in a tub or large sink. Two very good shampoos to help keep a Sealyham's coat nice and white are:
Tropiclean Facial Scrub - great for clearing and diminishing staining on faces and paws
- Training Resources:
Sealyham Terrier Grooming Video - Very useful video from the American Sealyham Terrier Club. Very helpful to see how
No hassle to order and they are very good to deal with.
Puppy Zen by Mark Vette - Great Resource on development and raising a happy well adjusted dog. Easy read and well
organised. A must have book!
